Spring had finally arrived, and our trusty friend CamperVan was itching to get back into the pine-scented high country. This time, the destination was the breathtaking Bear Canyon Lake, tucked along the majestic Mogollon Rim in Arizona.
But as any smart traveler knows, especially one with wheels and a cozy interior, preparation is key. So CamperVan fired up its Wi-Fi antenna and got to work.
Step One: Check the Road Conditions

Last year, the road off AZ-260 leading to Bear Canyon Lake was still snowed in by mid-April. So, CamperVan made a friendly call to the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest Ranger Station at 928-535-7300.
The ranger picked up and gave some good news:
“Yes, the road is open! We haven’t had much rain or snow this year—though there were some high snowdrifts, they’ve cleared. Normally the road doesn’t open until late April, but you’re good to go!”
CamperVan gave a happy honk.
Step Two: Wildfire Restrictions?

Unfortunately, the dry weather meant one thing—fire restrictions were in place. No campfires, not even the cozy kind. But CamperVan wasn’t worried. It proudly packed a solar-powered stove, perfect for whipping up hearty, healthy meals with zero flame.
Step Three: Weather Check

Time to look up that all-important forecast.
- Daytime highs? A perfect mid-60s°F—ideal for hiking the forest trails, soaking in those Mogollon Rim views, and not overheating.
- Nighttime lows? Ranging from 36°F to 41°F. Not freezing, but enough to justify a few extra blankets and maybe some fuzzy socks.
- Rain? None in the forecast. Blue skies ahead.
- Wind? Now this was something to note. Wind gusts between 29-31 mph were predicted. That’s enough to give CamperVan a little shake now and then, but nothing it couldn’t handle. Just no rooftop card games this weekday trip!
CamperVan’s Pro Tips for Planning a Trip to Bear Canyon Lake
Before you head out, make sure you check these:
Call the ranger station at 928-535-7300 to ask about road conditions and restrictions.
Verify fire restrictions — you might need an alternative cooking method like a solar stove or propane grill.
Check the weather forecast for both daytime highs and nighttime lows.
Look for rain predictions so you know if you’ll need a tarp or rain gear.
Check wind gusts — high winds can rock your van or make tent camping tough.
Bring a map or download offline maps — cell service can be spotty on the Rim.
