Touring France was the theme for the educational event hosted by Viking River & Ocean Cruises at The Encanterra Country Club Resort Community in Arizona.
Tour Through France
The registration for this event was limited to 100 guests. So many people wanted to attend that there was a waitlist in case others were to cancel. Many people love cruising and want to visit France.
French Delicacies and French Wine
In staying true to the French theme there were French snacks and French wines. This was a great way to get everyone in the French mood. Many guests around me had visited France in the past and were excited to go again.
Do’s When Touring France
Our presenter, who is a Destination Specialist for France with American Express, shared with us many great tips for touring France. Here are just a few.
- Handshakes are ok
- A greeting is to kiss both cheeks lightly or air kissing
- Let your host pour and refill your glass
- Bring cakes or candy to a party as a gift to the host
Don’ts When Touring France
When visiting a new location it is important to understand the local customs. Here are a few suggestions of what not to do.
- Step in the Merde – Our presenter reported that people do not pick up their dog waste that is on the street
- Keep your hands off the table
- Embrace friends or acquaintances in public
- Bring wine to a party
Parting Gifts
Viking River & Ocean Cruises gave us the wine glass to take home with us. Now, when I drink wine I will see the Viking cruise logo and think about cruising. I trust that was the idea behind giving out the glasses. We received a great tote bag and French chocolates. I will admit that I ate the chocolates during the presentation and they were delicious.
Touring France – Do’s and Don’ts
Have you visited France? If not, would you like to?
It is on our long list of places to go. There is so much I want to do, see and experience there that I know we would have to visit quite a few times. We have awhile before we could take a Viking Cruise (which is on our list) as our children are still to young to be able to take one. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, the Viking rep said no on kids.
“Don’t step in the merde” Haha, love it! I’ve been to France once and will certainly be back!
Glad to hear you enjoyed and would go again.
What a great list! Always good to know what to bring to a party or gathering.
I was surprised by the don’t bring wine.
I would love to visit France. The french pastries are what I’m looking forward to, as well as all of the beautiful sights.
Yum, the pastries will not disappoint you.
thank you so much for sharing these tips!

Some great tips here! Bringing wine is such a cultural norm here; it’s very interesting that it’s a don’t here!
I was surprised too when the teacher said that.
I’ve been to France three times and this post makes me wanna go again!
Yeay!!
What a great event! You had me with wine and macaroons!
The wine was delicious.
I haven’t been to France. Thanks for the tips. I’d like to trace the steps of my great-grandfather’s troop thru France. He was killed in WWI & is listed on Menin Gate Memorial.
That would be a great adventure to trace his steps.
Great tips for visiting France! Since France is on my travel wish list, I’m bookmarking to help with future planning.
Wonderful, glad it could help.
I have been to France 2 times. I love Paris and would love to go see the countryside.
Yes, the countryside would be lovey to visit.
I find it interesting that wine is not a gift you bring your host/hostess in France.
Me too. The teacher was very adamite about that.
Step in the Merde is very interesting! Love these tips. Thanks!
I had not heard that term before the class.
