How to Get To Quaking Aspen Dispersed Camping

Wild Camping New Mexico

You’ll find the Quaking Aspen Dispersed Camping area just past the developed Quaking Aspen Campground, about 6 miles south of Fort Wingate, NM.

  • Take Exit 33 off I-40 at Fort Wingate.
  • Head south on SR 400, driving straight through Fort Wingate.
  • Continue for about 6 more miles until you reach the entrance to the Quaking Aspen Campground on the west side of the road.
  • To reach the dispersed camping area, continue past Quaking Aspen Campground. Take the next right — it’s a dirt road.
  • If you’ve driven far enough to see Ponderosa Campground on the left, you’ve gone too far.
  • There are signs indicating private property — do not camp there. The dispersed area is on the right side of the road, just before you reach the pond.

Why Choose Dispersed Camping?

Dispersed camping offers a level of freedom and solitude that you just can’t find in developed campgrounds. During our stay, we had the entire area to ourselves—it was incredibly quiet, peaceful, and scenic. With no crowds, no traffic, and no noise, it felt like our own private slice of nature. The lack of artificial light also made for unforgettable stargazing under the dark skies. If you’re looking to disconnect from the hustle of daily life and embrace the simplicity of wild camping, boondocking in this spot is a perfect choice.
