Why is cabin camping great? Roasting marshmallows over a campfire, then realizing it is time to rest your head and all you have to do is walk into the comfortable climate-controlled cabin and fall asleep in a bed. Now that makes for a relaxing, low-stress camping adventure. That is exactly what Hunter and I got to experience while cabin camping at Lake Havasu State Park.

Reservations for Cabin Camping

Booking a reservation was very simple. Go online to the Lake Havasu Cabin Rental website.

Choose the dates you would like to visit. The website shows the locations of the cabins. Then pick your cabin!

After paying, you will receive an email confirmation. Keep this confirmation form and bring it with you because your cabin door combination is on that form. Don’t worry if you forget it, the ranger station will also have your confirmation documents. However, if you show up after the ranger station is closed – you better have your door code with you. 

If you are thinking about visiting during a busy time of the year like spring break or Mother’s Day, then you should book up to 365 days in advance.

Getting There and Maps

The Lake Havasu State Park entrance is about 230 miles from the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Address: 699 London Bridge Road, Lake Havasu, AZ 86403

A huge perk regarding the park location is it’s closeness to the town. For example, if you forget your toothbrush then there are many stores to go purchase a new one. There are also many restaurants to have a meal in town should you decide that you do not want to grill.

If you need assistance while you are visiting the park, there is a ranger station and visitor center to answer your questions. If you are staying in a cabin or campsite there are campsite hosts to ask questions too.

Lake Havasu State Park Cabins

There are 13 cabins with views of the river. Not just views but right next to the river. We were very fortunate to have a cabin that was in front of the sandy beach. Which we took advantage of one afternoon and laid out on our towels and enjoyed the sun. 

The cabins are furnished with a queen-sized bed, two sets of bunk beds, table and chairs, ceiling fan with overhead light, and electricity. Don’t worry; there are lots and lots of electrical plug-ins. 

There is no plumbing in the cabin; however, there are very nice restrooms within walking distance. Insider tip: The cabins in the center are closer to the restrooms. This was important to me because I use the restroom multiple times a night. 

When we camp, I watch the weather because I do not like being cold at night when trying to sleep. Guess what? These cabins have a heater, which we used because the low temperatures were approximately 45 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are going to visit during the summer there is also air-conditioning to keep you cool. 

When planning to have a nice and relaxing time, we suggest you pack the following items. For example, bring your linens. You can bring sheets and pillows. We brought our sleeping bags and pillows and that worked out great for cabin camping.

During our stay, we would bring in the sand on the bottoms of our shoes. There is a broom and dustpan available in each cabin, which was very helpful to sweep the sand out. When you go to leave is it best practices to clean up and confirm there was no damage done while you occupied the cabin. There is no place to leave a tip or gratuity for the cleaning crew that comes in as it is the park rangers who are in charge of checking the cabin. However, I did find a donation box in the ranger station in the visitor center. This is where we chose to leave a thank you for the park.

Each cabin has a picnic table. There is no cooking allowed inside. We brought our 2 burner camping stove that we used for most of our meals. 

There are individual fire rings. Make sure to bring firewood. You are not allowed to pick firewood from the park. If you forget to bring firewood, there are many stores within minutes from the park entrance that have firewood for purchase. I drank hot cocoa and roasted a huge marshmallow over the fire. It was great.

Insider Tips

• Pets are not allowed in the cabins, with the exception of service animals.
• Smoking and cooking are prohibited in cabins.
• Check-in time is 3 p.m. Check-out time is 10 a.m.
• No tents in this area
• South cabins are closer to the beach

RV Sites

On one of our walks, we viewed the RV campsites. They were full during the few days we were there. Per the website, all the campsites have 50-amp electrical hookups and potable water. The campers can use the shower/restroom, water, dump station, and use of park day-use facilities. We saw many sites had armadas with picnic tables. The sites appeared to also have a fire ring.

Cabin Camping Family-style Shower/Restrooms Facilities

When camping it is important to know what amenities are available. There were 6 restrooms in the restroom/shower building. The toilets were flushable. There was an air hand dryer near the sink and mirror. Four were shower/restroom combinations.

One morning when I was washing dishes, a fellow camper shared that the park had just installed the water heaters for the showers. It sure is nice to take a hot shower when camping to feel refreshed.

There is a very nice drinking water refill station at the same building.

Next to the drinking water station is a spacious dish cleaning station. The station had hot and cold water. This was a bonus for us as we are used to cleaning dishes in a cold stream.

I did use the restrooms in many other areas of the park and they were clean with flushable toilets.

Cabin Camping Activates

There are so many activities to do. The park has designated fishing locations and a fish cleaning station.

The park has designated swimming locations near the beaches and marked so that boaters are aware of swimmers. Do wear foot covers when swimming as the bottom can be rocky.

There are three boat ramps for boating. During the daylight hours, the boats on the lake were cigar boats or pontoon boats. In the early morning and late evening, the boats were fishing boats.

Now, if you are lucky or plan your trip to be on a new moon then the stargazing is incredible. We just so happen to be lucky. We would sit by the nice warm fire and lean back in our lounge chairs and view the constellations. Our first night we both saw the same shooting star.

Mohave Sunset Trail

Along the river and within the state park is the Mohave Sunset Trail (1.75 miles). It just so happens to go right past the cabins. We walked this trail many times. While on the trail we spotted birds that I would later ask the park rangers for names of. There were families of quail running around. At night we did hear coyotes. We like seeing bats in the evening, thinking they were eating the mosquitoes for us.

Arroyo-Camino Interpretive Garden

The Arroyo-Camino Interpretive Garden is a wonderful place to test your cacti name knowledge. The vegetation had labels such as cottonwood (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.). There were many locations to sit and watch the birds eat and play in the bird baths. I suggest getting up early to sit in the garden to spot many animals.

Relaxing Cabin Camping at Lake Havasu State Park, Arizona

If you have been thinking about experiencing camping but you do not own a tent or an RV, I highly suggest cabin camping. The cabins at Lake Havasu State Park give you the shelter to get out of the weather. Have you ever been camping and the wind and cold were just unbearable? That would not be the case if you rented a cabin.

I was impressed with the quality of the cabins at Lake Havasu State Park. I was not excepting the amount of space available in the rooms or all the electrical plug-ins. If you have a group of 6 people and they all have cell phones, there will not be any trouble finding a charging plug.
