SUP Boarding at Boulder Recreation Site, Canyon Lake, Arizona is a great location to have a quiet and relaxing day. The water is smooth and there are plenty of tables to have a picnic.

How To Get There

Boulder Canyon Recreation Site from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is about 31 miles northeast. When you type in Boulder Canyon Recreation Site it will show an address in Apache Junction, AZ. The road is paved from the airport to the parking lot.

Amenities

There are many parking lots for parking near the water. So you don’t have to carry your gear too far.

There are designated restrooms.

Picnic tables are available. Some are under shade and others are out in the open.

Tonto Park Pass

You get to purchase a Tonto Park Pass before you arrive. We stopped at a store on Route 88. They had a sign on the sidewalk that said, “We sale Tonto Passes here.”

Gear

As with any outdoor activities in Arizona, bring drinking water, sunblock, and a hat. We wear sunglasses and life jackets when we are on the water. Of course, you should bring your stand-up paddleboard and paddle if you are going to SUP.

Smooth Water

We visited in October and the water was chilly but felt great with the warm sun. I loved how the water was so smooth. Which made standing and paddling on the board very simple. There were about a dozen kayakers that came and went while we were there. Some people came and played in the water and had a picnic.
