In September of 2023, my world transformed into a mesmerizing realm of wonder and awe as I had the privilege to attend the Cirque du Soleil: Corteo show in the heart of Arizona. This experience was nothing short of magical, and I can’t wait to share the captivating moments and dazzling details with you.
Under the Big Top of Phoenix – Footprint Center
The show unfolded its grandeur at the illustrious Footprint Center, nestled in the vibrant city of Phoenix, Arizona. The venue itself was a sight to behold, setting the stage for the enchantment that was about to unfold.
A Joyful Resurrection of Deceased Clown
Corteo, the beloved deceased clown, made a triumphant return to the limelight, reclaiming its joyful place in the solar system, albeit at a festive fantasy funeral. The very title, “Corteo,” draws its inspiration from the Italian word “cortège,” signifying a majestic procession.
The 62-member cast, hailing from more than a dozen countries, included a mesmerizing array of talents – aerialists soaring through the air, acrobats defying gravity, musicians setting the rhythm, jugglers displaying incredible dexterity, contortionists bending the laws of physics, hoopers spinning in mesmerizing harmony, and gymnasts pushing the boundaries of human strength and agility.
Corteo Costume Extravaganza and Musical Mastery
Costume designer Dominique Lemieux worked her magic, drawing inspiration from “raw and luxurious” European fabrics of the early 20th century and the iconic commedia dell’arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The result? A visual feast of colors, textures, and styles that transported us through time while complementing the show’s fantastical atmosphere.
As the show unfolded, the live musicians effortlessly weaving the musical tapestry that accompanied each act. One standout performer, the tenor saxophonist, wove haunting melodies that tugged at the heartstrings, adding an emotional depth that elevated the entire experience.
Cirque du Soleil: Corteo – A Captivating Odyssey
The show was nothing short of captivating. Delivered in both English and Italian, it invited us into a world where every moment held the promise of something extraordinary. You had to keep your eyes peeled at all times, for missing even a split-second could mean missing an astounding flip in the air or a gravity-defying feat.
