It’s Derby Day! – Big Hats, Bowties, and Brunch

It's Derby Day! - Big Hats, Bowties, and Brunch

Welcome to Derby Day, the much-awaited outdoor event where attendees get to show off their big hats and bowties while celebrating the 2023 Kentucky Derby. The air is filled with excitement as people gather to watch the world-famous horse race and participate in the many festivities that make Derby Day so special.

Derby Hat Decorating Contest

We had the opportunity to participate in a hat decorating contest, and it was a blast! The event organizers had set out a wide range of supplies for us to choose from. Including hats, flowers, ribbons, and more. With so many options to choose from, it was exciting to see the creativity and unique ideas that each person came up with. Some decorated their hats with vibrant colors and patterns, while others opted for a more minimalistic approach. Personally, I decided to add some colorful flowers and a few playful ribbons to my hat. It was a fun and creative activity, and it was great to see everyone’s unique style and ideas come to life on their hats.

Human Horse Derby Races

There were four horses with interesting names: Maple Stirrup, Biscuit Eater, Harry Trotter, and Forrest Jump. The event included a horse race where audience members could choose which horse they thought would win. I picked Biscuit Eater Four volunteers from the audience were the horses. The announcer rolled dice, called out the horse’s number, and the corresponding person stepped towards the finish line. The excitement increased with each race, and while Biscuit Eater made it through the first race,  Biscuit Eater was out in the second one. In the end, Harry Trotter won, and the people who had picked him received gift cards as a reward for their betting prowess. It was a thrilling and fun-filled experience that left everyone wanting more.

Mint Juleps and a Mimosa Bar

The bar was fully stocked with many selections, but the highlighted beverages were the Mint Julep and Mimosa. The Mint Julep, in particular, had a special significance as it has been the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby for almost a century. While some may prefer the classic taste of a Mint Julep, others may opt for the fruity and bubbly flavor of a Mimosa. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preference. But one thing is for sure – both drinks are delicious and refreshing options to enjoy.

The Tasteful Derby Brunch Menu

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a delicious outdoor brunch under a beautiful white canopy, surrounded by friends and family. The brunch spread included a variety of mouth-watering dishes. Assorted quiches, hot browns, and bourbon meatballs were just a few of the savory options available to savor. For those who enjoy a bit of spice, the chow chow was the perfect addition to any plate. While hushpuppies added a delightful crunch. A green salad with assorted dressings provided a refreshing and healthy option to balance out the indulgent dishes. And for those with a sweet tooth, the bourbon bread pudding was the perfect way to end the meal. Overall, it was a delightful and satisfying brunch that left everyone feeling happy and content.

Big Hats, Bowties, and Brunch – It’s Derby Day!

Overall, it was a wonderful Derby Day filled with memorable moments. The hat decorating contest allowed attendees to showcase their creativity and unique style. While the human horse derby races added a fun and interactive element to the event. The Mint Juleps and Mimosa Bar provided refreshing libations for all to enjoy. The tasteful derby brunch was a delicious way to fuel up for the day’s activities. As the event drew to a close, it was clear that everyone had a great time and made lasting memories on this special day.

  8. I was born and raised in Kentucky and the Kentucky Derby is a huge deal! I live in a suburb of Louisville (where the Kentucky Derby is held) where we celebrate the Derby for weeks with different celebrations (balloon glow, fireworks, etc.). It sure is fun to see how creative people get with their fashion and their hats. As a kid, we would have our own derby at school using stick horses!
