You are walking in a field in Arkansas diamond hunting and the sunlight reflects off an object on the ground. Is it a diamond? It could be if you are walking in the fields at Crater of Diamonds State Park.

Crater of Diamonds State Park Location

During our cross-country road trip in the summer of 2022, we had an opportunity to visit Crater of Diamonds State Park. It is located at 209 State Park Rd, Murfreesboro, AR 71958.

If you have been following our blog, you know we enjoy treasure hunting. Therefore we were excited to spend a few days playing in the dirt searching for diamonds.

Visit the website for current admission prices. A tip, the first day I purchased our tickets online. On the second day, I purchased our ticket onsite. The price was lower if you purchase onsite vs online.

Hunting for Stones

There are multiple ways to search for diamonds here.

Walking the field Dimond Hunting Forever sabbatical

First, you can simply walk up and down the fields and use your eyes to spot a diamond on the surface. This technique is good after the area has received rain and the diamonds are exposed. It had been raining before we arrived and used this technique.

Second, you can perform dry sieving. This is a good way when the grounds are dry and the soil will fall through and leave the diamonds. The field was very muddy from the recent rains, therefore we did not use this technic during our visit.

The third is to use the water system. We dug soil and put it in a bucket. Carried it over to the water station. Then used screens to wash off the soil and then sort through the stones.

Diamond Hunting Equipment

You can rent equipment from the park. Items include buckets, shovels, screens, and other equipment.

We brought a shovel and rented a bucket and screen.

I also recommend a hat, sunscreen, knee pads, and a chair to sit in when you take a break.

Meeting People

When we were at the water station, we would get to know our fellow gem hunters. People shared stories about how many times they had visited and if they had found a diamond before.

We met a couple that celebrates their wedding anniversary every year for the past 7 years here at the Crater of Diamonds State Park. The first time they visited they found a diamond and were hooked. They had not found any since then but they love spending time together.

Diamond Hunting

This was our second visit to this park. We have not found any diamonds yet. I would go again if passing through the area.

If you are into finding stones check out the Quartz Crystals that can be found at Diamond Point Arizona. Check out the photo and information in our blog: https://foreversabbatical.com/diamond-point-arizona-quartz-crystals/

How would you like to find a diamond? In the field or in the store?
